When you think of Switzerland, your mind might go straight to snow capped mountains and chocolate. But in Lugano, you’ll find a softer, sunnier side of Swiss life…complete with palm trees, lake breezes, and plenty of fun for kids. Whether you’re passing through on a family trip or planning a longer stay, Lugano is the kind of place where grown-ups can soak in the beauty while kids have space to play, explore, and discover. Since I was 6 months old, I have been traveling to Switzerland at least once a year! I have learned so much having travelled alone and now also with my toddlers. The best part of Lugano is how kid friendly it is! The city is filled with parks and fun activities.

Stroll the Lakefront Promenade
Here is a day in our life on vacation in Switzerland!
One of the easiest (and most enjoyable) activities is simply walking along Lake Lugano’s promenade. The path is stroller-friendly, dotted with benches, fountains, and flower gardens, making it a lovely spot for kids to ride scooters or just chase the ducks by the water. Parents get sweeping views of the lake and surrounding mountains which is a win-win.
Accommodations:
Airbnb with AC: we really enjoyed staying here and will definitely book again! It was a 5 minute walk to the lake front and a 15-min walk along the lake to the center of lugano. It also had air conditioning which was a major plus since we went in the summer months! Finding an Airbnb with air conditioning is actually pretty rare
Happy Rentals: I have also rented through this company and it was great. They have so many great locations.
Ride the Funiculars
Few things thrill kids more than hopping on a funicular that glides straight up the hillside. The Monte Brè funicular takes you to incredible panoramic views (and has family-friendly trails at the top), while the Monte San Salvatore funicular whisks you to another famous peak where adventurous kids can climb a short tower for a bird’s-eye view of the city.
Parks and Playgrounds
Lugano knows how to keep little travelers happy. Parco Ciani is a gem right in the city center, filled with playgrounds, open lawns, and shady spots for picnics. It’s perfect for burning off energy before or after sightseeing.

Sweet Treats and Family Eats
Gelato is practically mandatory in Lugano, and you’ll find plenty of stands and cafés serving scoops along the lake. For something more filling, family-friendly pizzerias are scattered around town, and many restaurants welcome kids with open arms (and high chairs).
My favorite gelato stores:
Venezia in Viganello: my girls LOVE the big ice cream cone at the front. During high seasons, it will be busy! They line goes quick and it is so worth the wait.
Favorite Family Friendly Restaurants:
Sole Pizzeria & Restaurante: my family always loves coming here for their delicious authentic Italian pizza. It has a large outdoor area making it family friendly. My kids at one point were running around..
Easy Family Hikes
If your kids are up for adventure, Lugano has gentle trails that reward you with big views without too much effort. A favorite is the walk from Gandria, a charming lakeside village, back into Lugano along a flat lakeside path. It’s stroller-friendly and offers lots of little spots to stop, snack, or dip toes in the water.
Swissminiatur (Melide)
Just a 15-minute train ride from Lugano, this is a park full of mini versions of Switzerland’s most famous buildings, trains, and landmarks. It’s basically Switzerland in LEGO-sized form—kids go nuts for the tiny working trains!
LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura – Family Events
Check their schedule—LAC often hosts children’s performances, workshops, and storytelling events that are interactive and multilingual.
Rainy-Day Fun
If the weather doesn’t cooperate, you’re not stuck. The Lido di Lugano has indoor swimming options, and the Swissminiatur park (just a short train ride away in Melide) lets kids explore tiny versions of Switzerland’s most famous landmarks.
Final Thoughts
Traveling with kids doesn’t have to mean giving up beauty, culture, or relaxation. In Lugano, families can enjoy the best of both worlds: a breathtaking destination with plenty of space for children to run, play, and be curious. It’s a place that proves family travel can be as fun for the grown-ups as it is for the little ones.
